From Serving Meals to Sharing Music: Amati Strings Returns to the Orange County Rescue Mission
For the musicians of Amati Strings, performing at the Orange County Rescue Mission was more than another community concert—it was a meaningful homecoming.
Years earlier, the directory of our group had volunteered at the Mission as part of another service group. Instead of standing on a stage with instruments in hand, we stood behind the cafeteria counter serving meals to residents and families. We greeted guests with a smile, filled plates with warm food, and did our best to show kindness through simple acts of service.
Returning this time felt both familiar and different.
The same dining hall that had once been a place where we served dinner had become our concert venue. Rather than offering food, we came with violins, violas, cellos, and piano, hoping to nourish hearts through music.
A Different Way to Serve
The Orange County Rescue Mission provides shelter, meals, and support for individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. Some residents are rebuilding after financial hardship. Others are recovering from personal crises or escaping unsafe situations. Every person who walks through the Mission’s doors has a unique story.
That evening, as families gathered for dinner, the cafeteria filled with music instead of the usual sounds of conversation alone.
As we played, children smiled and clapped along while parents and grandparents enjoyed a warm meal. The atmosphere became lighter as familiar melodies echoed throughout the room.
It reminded us that service can take many forms.
Sometimes it’s offering a hot meal.
Sometimes it’s offering a listening ear.
And sometimes it’s simply sharing music that gives people an opportunity to pause, breathe, and enjoy an evening together.
Familiar Faces, New Memories
Standing where we had once served meals brought back memories of our earlier volunteer experiences.
We remembered handing trays across the counter, refilling drinks, cleaning tables, and doing whatever was needed to help the staff serve the community. Those experiences taught us that every act of kindness—no matter how small—can make someone’s day a little brighter.
Returning as musicians allowed us to contribute in a different way.
The concert became another expression of the same desire that first brought us to the Mission: to serve others with compassion and generosity.
Music That Brings People Together
One of the evening’s highlights came when the children were invited to participate.
They enthusiastically joined in singing songs such as “Bésame Mucho” and “APT.” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars, drawing smiles and applause from everyone in the cafeteria. For a few joyful moments, the audience became part of the performance, and the room was filled with laughter, singing, and encouragement.
Families from many different cultures and backgrounds shared the experience together. Despite their different life stories, everyone was united by the simple joy of live music.
Serving with Compassion
Our mission to help others has long encouraged us to care for our neighbors and to serve with humility. Whether preparing meals, volunteering our time, or performing music, the goal has always been the same: to treat every person with dignity and compassion.
The evening also served as a reminder that circumstances do not define a person’s worth. Many people staying at the Mission are working hard to overcome temporary setbacks, while others are navigating challenges that most of us never see. Behind every face is a story, and behind every story is someone deserving of kindness, respect, and hope.
More Than a Concert
As the final applause filled the cafeteria, we packed away our instruments with grateful hearts.
Years ago, we left the Orange County Rescue Mission knowing we had helped serve dinner.
This time, we left hoping we had also served something less tangible but equally meaningful—a sense of joy, encouragement, and community.
Music cannot solve every problem, but it can remind people that they are seen, valued, and not alone.
For Amati Strings, returning to the Orange County Rescue Mission was a powerful reminder that there are many ways to serve others. Whether carrying a dinner tray or carrying a violin, every opportunity to share kindness is a chance to make a difference.
